The prickly pear cactus plant known as "bajtar tax-xewk" is a typical plant found in Malta. The plant produces a delicious fruit which comes in a variety of colours ranging from green to yellow, red and purple.  The prickly pear fruit is named after its pear shape and size, and is known for having a rather prickly skin.  However, once you get past the skin, the fruit is made out of a soft and porous fleshy inside which ranges in colour from light yellow to a rich, golden or ruby colour and has a sweet, melon-like aroma.  The fruit is enjoyed in places with typically warm climates, including central and south America, the southern parts of Africa and countries in the Mediterranean, such as Malta.
